The Shield and The Sword is the 3rd single from Light After Dark, Clare Maguire’s first album. Clare, who came 5th in the BBC Sound of 2011 list, released a discrete, disappointing first solo effort in February, which went in at number 7 in the UK Albums Chart.
This is probably the best song on the album, along with the previous two singles, Aint Nobody and The Last Dance and maybe I Surrender, though the later does not precisely contribute to the album’s originality (or lack of), it just sounds like that song you’ve heard countless times before that is really catchy. The Shield and The Sword stands out for its orchestral arrangements and Clare Maguire’s vocals that convert the song into an ethereal and dramatic 3 minute piece that alone delights but amongst the rest of the album gets a bit too much.
